Walther provided the P.38 pistol to the German Army with two magazines. It was not uncommon that issued P.38 magazines had to be replaced because of either failure or loss. These replacement magazines can be recognized rather easily because they are marked with Walther’s ac code on the left side of the magazine housing. Five variations of these replacement magazines are known, and all are marked with ac. The same development changes found for the standard Walther magazines can be observed for the replacement magazines.
3rd variation; From about mid-1942 until the end of 1943, Walther produced magazines that were marked with P.38 on the left side of the magazine housing and only one E/359 marking on the spine. The smaller parts were no longer stamped with E/359. In addition, Walther produced ac marked replacement magazines during the production period of this magazine variation. These were virtually identical to the regular issued magazines; the only difference was that the replacements magazines were stamped with ac under the P.38 marking.
